Sunrise Rides in the WOESRAND

Sunrise rides are just amazing. The feeling you get when you wake up early to go for a ride, normally starting in the dark, and then, soon after hitting the trails the sun starts to show it’s face on the Horison. If you are lucky, the sky will be clear, maybe with some clouds, ready to show off.

Sunrise times vary with more than an hour between Summer and Winter rides (obviously).

If you planning to see the sunrise in Summer you will need to wake up a bit earlier. We normally start riding at 05:00 during Summer when sunrise is at +/- 05:20. In Winter the sun only shows itself around 06:50. Our rides start mostly at 06:00 during Winter which means that we are about 10 to 15km into the ride when the sun comes up, somewhere on a trail, like in the photo above taken by Ryan this past Saturday.

Here are some more Sunrise / early morning photos taken on recent rides. Makes you want to go out and get more ……

It is important to plan well for early rides. Here’s a quick checklist:

  1. Check your bike the night before, lube, tyres etc
  2. All chargeable items to be checked, Garmin, Watch, Lights, AXS etc
  3. Put your kit out the night before, everything from socks, shoes, helmet, gloves, sunnies, kit, winter kit, etc
  4. All tools, food and stuff you carry with you should also be put out ready for the ride.
  5. Water bottles / hydration pack should be put out ready to use or fill them up and put them on the bike so long. I summer we sometimes put our bottles in the freezer over night so you have a nice cool drink on the ride ….. don’t forget them.

If you are new to early rides, invest in a good front light for the bike so you can see the trails ahead and also a red light at the back of your bike so cars and other riders can see you in the dark. Make sure your back light is not obstructed by your wheel, water bottle, saddle etc.

If you are meeting other riders at a starting point, make sure that they are expecting you and if you can’t make it for some reason or you are running late, you must be able to notify someone in the group so that they know what’s happening.

Enjoy, have fun and stay safe!
