Problem Solving

We all know the feeling when you are riding along, enjoying the trails and all of a sudden there is this annoying little creak, squeaking, clicking, rattling noise and you have no idea where it is coming from.

Checklist for finding “the” noise

  1. Check for play on the headset and bottom bracket.
  2. Check all bolts for anything that might be loose on the bike, bottle holders, saddle, saddle bags, tool bags, seat post, stem, chain ring bolts, rotor bolts, caliper bolts, pedals etc.
  3. Brake / gear hoses can be hitting against each other or the frame making a noise.
  4. Sometimes when you ride over a nail, it will stick into the wheel and as the wheel turns it will hit against the inside of the rim, causing a clicking noise as the wheel turns.
  5. Thorns and other objects may also be stuck in the wheel and hitting against the frame as the wheel turns.
  6. Worn / loose brake pads can also cause big noise.
  7. Bearings in the frame / wheels, freehub, bottom bracket, pully wheels or headset that are worn or seized can be the cause.
