Group Ride Essentials

What every rider should have with him / her on a group ride … as far as possible … did I mention that we love to stop for coffee? We do!

  1. Identification and emergency contact details: We recommend that each rider has a ICE ID personal info tag for emergencies, If you don’t have one, please have a look at https://iceid.co.za/
  2. Most of the terrain that we ride is not ideal for tubes in tyres so tubeless tyres are recommended.
  3. Depending on the distance, make sure you have enough to eat and drink on the ride. Most longer rides will have refill stops but make sure of this before you attempt a long ride.
  4. Be prepared for mechanicals, spare tube, tyre levers, multitool, tubeless puncture repair kit, spare plugs, bombs & bomb adapter, glue, chain link, valve, valve core, mini-pump and spare lube …. are some of the bare essentials.
  5. Have a backup plan / person to call. In the event of a mechanical or an injury where you can’t continue the ride, you need to be able to call someone to come and fetch you.
  6. Keep your bike maintained as this will cut down on unnecessary mechanicals along the way.
  7. Know the plan. If you are riding with a group for the first time, make sure you know what distance & speed they are planning, find out about refill stops and what time do they plan to be back.

The general rule is that the whole group stays together for the ride. If there are riders that ride shorter or planning to split off they need to just inform some of the other riders of their plan to do so.

Where riders fall behind and can’t keep up with the pace of the general group, the whole group either slows down to their pace or they one or two other riders will drop back with them for the remainder of the ride, making sure everyone gets back safely.
