Trail rules and general trail etiquette exists for your own as well as other trails user’s safety and are therefore important to follow. It is also crucial for the preservation and protection of the environment so that we and many more after us may enjoy this sport for many years to come.

Here are some basics to keep in mind next time you are on the trails.
- Never leave a trace. Make sure that wrappers, plastic, tape, parts, tubes, bombs etc. are carried with you until you get to a place where it can be thrown away.
- Respect other trail users. Especially when riding in bike-parks. Many hikers, trail runners, walkers and other mountain bikers will be using the trails at the same time.
- Follow the arrows. When riding on marked trails, make sure you are going in the right direction to avoid unwanted accidents.
- Right of way. General single-track etiquette is to give right of way to riders coming from the bottom of a trail (riding uphill). Be vigilant at all times and observe the trail ahead for oncoming riders especially on unmarked trails.
- Overtaking. Riders should only overtake other riders when it is safe to do so and once the rider in the front has been made aware that you want to pass. Always take your own as well as the other rider’s safety into consideration.
- Pay your way. When riding in Bike-parks, be sure to pay for using the trails as this will help maintain the trails that you enjoy.
- Respect and obey Landowners. As trails might go through private land (where permitted), make sure that you obey all the rules, close gates behind you, do not litter, do not scare animals etc.
- Be a trail fairy (Farrier). When riding on a trail and you see an obvious obstacle that is not supposed to be there like a big rock that rolled onto the trail or a tree that has fallen over the trail, broken bottles, etc, if possible and if safe to do so, stop and remove them off the trail.
- Report any trail issues to park owners if riding in a bike-park.
- Respect and be friendly to locals as many trails also go through rural areas where there are locals, kids playing, dogs etc.
- Respect all animals, wild, farm or domestic animals can be startled easily causing problems and accidents. Be careful and approach all of them with caution.
- All traffic rules should be obeyed at all times when riding on the road.
- Be prepared by making sure you have the necessary spares to assist you in case of a mechanical. When riding alone, make sure that someone knows where you are and what time you expected back. Have someone that you can contact in case of an emergency.
- Use common sense in every situation.
- Be an ambassador for the sport.
There will always be exceptions to any rule or situation. Be courteous, vigilant and respectful at all times.
